National Intellectual Property Awards 2012

1.      Objective
The awards will be presented to the awardees at a conference in Delhi, organized by the Indian Intellectual Property Office (IPO) in collaboration with The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII). The objective of awarding the National Intellectual Property (IP) Awards is to recognize and reward creators/innovators of IP who have contributed in harnessing the country’s intellectual capital and creating an eco-system that boosts creativity and innovation.

2.      Categories of IP Awards (Patents, Trademarks & Design)
The awards will be presented to encourage skilled management of an intellectual property portfolio in such a manner that it influenced the fundamental success of a business, whether large or small, in different industry verticals. This year, following seven awards will be given:
1.      Top Indian Academic institution in Patent
2.      Top Indian Private Company (Large scale) in Patent
3.      Top Indian Public Sector Company in Patent
4.      Top Indian Private Company (MSME) in Patent
5.      Top Individual in Patent
6.      Top Organization in Trade Mark
7.      Top Organization/individual in Design

Each award will carry a cash prize of Rs. 1,00,000/- each and a citation.

3.      Broad parameters for selection
These awards will not be given solely on the basis of number of Intellectual Property Rights registered/granted. The employment of such IPRs as a strategic tool in commerce & industry, along with its contribution to the society at large, will be taken into consideration. For the purposes of National IP Awards 2012, a period of last years i.e. 2006-2011 will be taken into consideration. Following four parameters are relevant:

3.1     Number of IPRs Granted / Registered.
3.2     Growth in IPR portfolio in the last five years.
3.3     Leveraging of IPRs for achieving commercial goals (valuation of IPRs, licensing, launching of new products / processes associated with granted / registered IPRs)
3.4     Efforts for inculcating IPR culture (R&D budget, employment of human resources for R&D, collaborations with industries and universities, licensing from other sources etc.)
3.5     Contribution towards humanity at large and towards socio-economic development of the Country in particular.

4.      Eligibility
Indian industry (micro, small, medium, large) both private and PSUs, registered in India under The Companies Act; Indian Academic and R&D institutions; and individuals who have at least one IPR (Patent, Trademark, Design) granted / registered by Indian Intellectual Property Office, during the last five years are eligible for applying for this award.

5.      Jury
Awardees will be selected by an independent jury comprising of professionals from India and Overseas working in the diverse fields such as:
i.                    IP professionals;
ii.                  Industrialists;
iii.                Researchers;
iv.                R&D managers; &
v.                  Representative(s) of the Government of India,

6.      How to Apply
Eligible IP Owners / Inventors may complete the Application Form (Annexure 1) and the Annexure(s) 2, 3, and 4 (whichever is applicable). The completed Application Form along with the applicable Annexures is required to be sent to the following address so as to reach on or before 1st March 2012:
