Table 1. LMFAO and related trademark applications

LMFAO attempted to register five trademarks, all of which included the band’s name, in early 2008 and 2009. Three of the applications were rejected by the examining attorney on a 15 USC §1052 (a) of the U.S. Trademark Act for consisting or comprising of immoral or scandalous matter (Ser. No. 77732029, 77732024, and 77692237). At this point, LMFAO and its attorney might have thought, “Well, they caught us and we all know what the “F” stands for and there’s no arguing about that.” The “F” in LMFAO could be said to consisting or comprising of immoral or scandalous matter, and the band might have thought that there wasn’t a way to argue against it.

An individual filled an application for the mark LMFAO (Ser. No. 85337050) in 2011. This applicant received an office action concerning to its meaning surprisingly not as to the scandalous nature of the mark! The examining attorney asked whether LMFAO had any significance in the industry for which the applied would use the mark (clothing).

LMFAO hired Alina S. Morris, a new attorney, and filed four new applications for the LMFAO mark on March 16, 2012. The attorney being proactive due to prosecution history of application for the mark LMFAO (Ser. No. 85337050, included the miscellaneous statement, “LMFAO stands for ‘laughing my freaking ass off” in recent trademark application. We wish LMFAO best of luck for new trademark application after considering prior prosecution history.

HI IP MADS,

World Book and Copyright Day is also known as International Day of the Book is a yearly event on 23 April, organized by UNESCO to promote reading, publishing and copyright. The Day was first celebrated in 1995.

History
23 April is a symbolic date for world literature for on this date in 1616, Cervantes, Shakespeare and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega all died. It is also the date of birth or death of other prominent authors such as Maurice Druon, Haldor K.Laxness, Vladimir Nabokov, Josep Pla and Manuel Mejía Vallejo.

UNESCO Prize for Children's and Young People's Literature in the Service of Tolerance

It was a natural choice for UNESCO's General Conference, held in Paris in 1995, to pay a world-wide tribute to books and authors on this date, encouraging everyone, and in particular young people, to discover the pleasure of reading and gain a renewed respect for the irreplaceable contributions of those who have furthered the social and cultural progress of humanity. In this respect, UNESCO created both the World Book and Copyright Day and the UNESCO Prize for Children's and Young People's Literature in the Service of Tolerance.

Theme for 2012: Books and Translation

The year 2012 also marks the 80th anniversary of the Index Translationum. This international bibliography of translation provides a unique tool for the monitoring of translation flows in the world. UNESCO will celebrate this anniversary by organizing a debate on this instrument.
